Frequently Asked Questions

Is gravel the same as stone?

Gravel and stone are similar, but gravel is made of small, loose rocks, while stone refers to larger, solid pieces. They’re both used in landscaping and construction, but gravel is smaller and often mixed with other materials, while stone is bigger and more solid.

What is the difference between gravel and pebbles?

Gravel and pebbles are both small rocks, but they have some differences. Gravel is made up of various sizes of rock fragments, ranging from small to large, often used in construction or landscaping. It’s typically more angular and rougher in texture.

On the other hand, pebbles are generally smaller and smoother than gravel. They’re often rounded by natural erosion, found along beaches or riverbeds. Pebbles are commonly used for decorative purposes in gardens, pathways, and water features.

So, while both gravel and pebbles serve similar purposes, their size, texture, and origin set them apart.

What does gravel mean for driveway?

Gravel for driveways refers to small rocks or stones spread over the driveway surface. It provides a stable and durable surface for vehicles to drive on.

How long does gravel last for?

The lifespan of gravel depends on various factors such as usage, climate, and maintenance. Generally, gravel can last for many years, sometimes even decades, if properly installed and maintained. Regular upkeep, like adding more gravel as needed and compacting it periodically, can help prolong its lifespan.

Should I put anything under gravel?

Putting something under gravel, like a weed barrier fabric or landscaping fabric, can help prevent weeds from growing through the gravel and also improve drainage. Additionally, laying a base layer of crushed stone or compacted gravel can provide stability and prevent sinking or shifting. However, whether to use a base layer or not depends on factors like the type of soil, the intended use of the gravel area, and personal preference.
